Description:  Perennial fruticose herbage plant, the hollow stemis height of 1.5~2 m in average, and with red or fuchsia spot on thesurface. The leaves are broad oval with a truncated base, 7~14 cm long and5~12 cm broad, with an entire margin. The panicle is axillary, and the dioeciousflower has 5 calyxes, comb shaped style; the achene is oval shaped with 3 edges.Florescence is from June to July, and the fruit period is from September toOctober.

Traditional use of the plant: The roots of Polygonumcuspidatum are used in traditional Chinese herbal medicines as a natural laxative. The active principle responsible for the laxative effect is emodin, present in its natural form as a complex of its analogs.

Storage condition: Cool&dry place. Do not freeze. Keep away from strong light and heat.
